Europe Post Merkel: Angela Merkel’s Impact on the EU and how Transatlantic politics could look like going forward

Angela Merkel has been in office for 16 years and has been an extraordinary force for stability in the West. The end of her chancellorship and with that new leadership in Berlin, injects a degree of uncertainty on both sides of the Atlantic about the general course and the new champions who may fill the gap her departure will create.

The 2008 financial crisis, Brexit, the pandemic and the rise of authoritarian regimes have challenged the values of the European Union. After a turbulent 2020 election cycle, the US is nearly one year into a new administration that is managing both domestic and international crises.

Our Panel will discuss how the upcoming change in German leadership may affect not only the power dynamic within Europe but also more broadly, how next German Chancellor and new elections elsewhere across Europe, may change the transatlantic relationship.

We will explore if the change at the top will offer a breath of fresh air not only for Germany, but also for Europe and the Transatlantic collaboration and if a new coalition will be able to rally Europe to step up and become a more active business & political partner to the United States.
